Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he will not sign players just to appease Manchester United’s fans.
With three days until the transfer window shuts, United have yet to sign anyone, despite their squad having been stretched by injuries to key players.
United have, however, agreed a fee with Sporting Lisbon for Bruno Fernandes in a deal worth up to £67.8million, after Barcelona entered the race to sign the Portuguese midfielder.
But the lack of activity in this month’s transfer window will intensify the hostility towards owners the Glazers and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, whom United fans want out.
Although Solskjaer knows there will be a backlash if United do not sign anyone before Friday’s 11pm deadline, he said he will not bring in players just for the sake of it.
“We are players down with injuries, so we’ve looked at options,” said Solskjaer. “But we’ll not sign players here for the sake of just signing a player to have one more number. You’ve got to be right for the place.
“If it’s a loan to the summer to help us it’s still got to be someone that helps the squad that’s here.
“If it’s a permanent signing, it has to be someone that’s in our plans for the future.
“But it’s difficult, this window always been. I can’t remember how many good ones we’ve brought in and good deals we’ve done in January.
“Henrik Larsson was good, Nemanja Matic and Patrice Evra, they were two good ones, but it’s difficult, because clubs don’t want to lose their best players.”
Solskjaer confirmed Tuesday’s exclusive that Alexis Sanchez, on a season-long loan at Inter Milan, will be given a chance to resurrect his United career in the summer.
“Alexis is one of the top, top players, he was one of the top players at Arsenal ,” said Solskjaer.
“We signed a good player there, but he’s had so many injuries he’s been unlucky. Alexis will come back in the summer and will prove you all wrong.”
