Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful of making at least one signing in the January transfer window following Erling Haaland’s decision to join Dortmund.

The Norwegian met with Haaland in Salzburg earlier this month in a bid to convince the teenager to join United.

However, Dortmund confirmed a deal for the striker on Sunday with United insisting that they could not agree to elements of the contract that were being demanded by Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola.

United had been hopeful of securing Haaland’s signature and his decision to reject the Red Devils is a bitter blow for Solskjaer.

Nevertheless, the Norwegian wants to add to his squad in the window and he’s confirmed he’s hopeful of doing so.

Asked whether he could make signings next month, Solskjaer said: ‘If we can keep these lot fit and if we can keep on improving, and if you get one addition or two additions, of course that’s going to be competition for places. That’s what you’ve got to deal with at this club.

‘I’m always an optimist. I’m a striker by nature and I’ve always been an optimist.

‘I’m optimistic we can keep players fit and if the right ones become available we do have the resources and I do have the backing from the board.

‘But it’s also about getting the right ones. It has to be. There’s no point suddenly bringing someone else in now for the sake of three or four months if that can disrupt any good feeling or chemistry in the group, because the chemistry in the group is really good.’

Solskjaer has funds at his disposal after failing to use the £74m United earned from Romelu Lukaku’s move to Inter Milan last summer.

But, the failure to sign a replacement has been a blessing for teenager Mason Greenwood and Solskjaer admits he’s delighted at the 18-year-old’s performances.

‘We always believed Anthony [Martial] and Marcus [Rashford] were going to score goals but Mason has filled a big void,’ Solskjaer said.

‘He’s chipped in with goals. So I’m not worried about goals from centre forwards.

‘Mason’s on eight now. Marcus I don’t know – 14 or 15 (16)? Anthony has quite a few. Romelu’s a good striker and he’ll always score goals but it was time for him to move on.’
