Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expecting Bruno Fernandes to be ready to play when he officially signs for Manchester United before Friday’s transfer deadline.

A deal for the midfielder has been agreed with Sporting and the 25-year-old just needs to go through a medical and agree personal terms in Manchester before putting pen to paper.

There are not expected to be any complications and the Portugal international is going to become a Manchester United player before the weekend.

This will put him in line to make his debut for the club against Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday in the 5.30pm kick-off and Solskjaer sees no reason why he would not be available for selection immediately.

‘Let’s get the contract signed and the medical done but the boy’s fit and ready to play I would presume,’ said the Norwegian on Wednesday.

‘So let’s see if it could get done tomorrow.’

Fernandes has played 17 league games for Sporting this season, most recently a full 90 minutes in a 1-0 win over Maritimo on Monday night in Lisbon.

On the impending deal, Solskjaer said: ‘I’m delighted that we’ve agreed with Sporting. There have been good negotiations with the club and we know, through history, these two clubs have been good with each other.

‘Now we’ve reached that agreement, hopefully we can get the boy’s contract over the line and the medical done and then, hopefully we can announce it.’

After lengthy negotiations, and late interest from Barcelona, United have agreed to pay the Portuguese club €55million (£46.5m) upfront and a further €25m (£21m) in bonuses for their captain.

The majority of add-ons are performance related but Sporting will earn an additional €5m if United qualify for the Champions League.
