Mason Greenwood has missed out on the chance of a rare start for Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday night due to illness.

The 18-year-old has scored four goals in five Europa League appearances for United this season but will not get to add to that tally away to Club Brugge this week.

He was expected to be involved, but Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that he is not well enough to play and has not joined the rest of the squad in Belgium.

‘Mason hasn’t travelled, he didn’t feel well. Apart from that, it’s more or less the same squad as Monday,’ Solskjaer explained to MUTV.

It is disappointing timing for the teenager, who has scored 10 goals in all competitions this season, but has found the Europa League as his best opportunity for starts.

He will hope to be fit for the return leg at Old Trafford next Thursday.

In his absence, loan signing Odion Ighalo could get an opportunity to prove his worth to the team after making his debut as a substitute on Monday night in the 2-0 win away at Chelsea.

The 30-year-old did not arrive at the club at full fitness, but Solskjaer says he is fast catching up the rest of the squad and looks likely to feature in Belgium.

‘He’s glad to have got on the pitch,’ Solskjaer said of Ighalo’s brief appearance at Stamford Bridge.

‘He’s represented us now and it’s just about getting sharper and fitter because he’s been out of season. So he’s trained well and looking forward to this game.’

Victor Lindelof missed the game against Chelsea due to illness but is expected to feature against Club Brugge having travelled with the squad to Belgium.

Scott McTominay is back in training after a lengthy injury lay-off but is unlikely to play on Thursday.
