Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Alexis Sanchez will have a significant role to play for Manchester United this season and played down suggestions he would leave or has been demoted to the reserves.

The Chilean, the highest-paid player at Old Trafford, is still recovering from an injury picked up at the Copa America and there have been reports that he wants to leave this month – with the transfer window still open abroad.

There have also been reports of a bust-up with Mason Greenwood, while The Sun claimed Solskjaer was so eager to get rid of Sanchez he was prepared to make him train with the reserves.

But Solskjaer is adamant Sanchez does still have a future at the club, particularly with United so light on senior attacking options after the deadline day sale of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan.

‘Alexis is such a professional and he comes in working every single day really hard and wants to be a part of this,’ Solskjaer explained at a press conference on Friday before facing Wolves.

‘It’s these stories again he’s been put in the reserves and all this sort of stuff. Of course he hasn’t. He’s part of our squad and he’s a very, very good player.

‘He’s just had a couple of weeks – three weeks now – [of training] so he’s a few weeks behind the rest but close to being part of it.’

He continued: ‘Well with Alexis we don’t have the biggest forward line in numbers so Alexis might end up playing a lot more games than you expect. Because we expect him to come good at this club, he’s quality.’

On how he’s progressing, Solskjaer added: ‘We had a behind-closed-doors game and he’s training, he’s doing a little bit of extras, and he’ll be gradually integrated into more and more playing time.

‘But we’ll have more behind-closed-doors games because with one game a week now it’s hard to keep everyone ticking, so we’re arranging a few of them.’
