Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended Victor Lindelof after he was criticised by Rio Ferdinand for his performance during Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Southampton at St Mary’s.

United went in front through Daniel James early on before Jannik Vestergaard equalised with a towering header after out-jumping Lindelof to the ball from Kevin Danso’s cross.

Ferdinand blasted Lindelof for not marking his man tighter, saying on BT Sport: ‘If you look at the two centre-halves for the goal, they know where the danger is, they’re both pointing.

‘They should shuffle against the danger man. They’re both passing the buck there. A Sol Campbell or Martin Keown would be looking for the danger man and taking responsibility.

‘Lindelof is the main culprit here. It’s a case of personal pride. They both have to say ‘have I done enough there?’ If Lindelof gets tight earlier on, Vestergaard can’t get a run on him.’

Lindelof also missed a vital header during last weekend’s shock 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace as he was beaten to the ball by Jeffrey Schlupp in the lead-up to Jordan Ayew’s opener.

Solskjaer was adamant that Lindelof performed well apart from in that incident and stated that the Swedish defender is just going through a rough patch of form.

‘As a centre-back, once in a while you do lose a header,’ Solskjaer said. ‘And sometimes it’s just in those patches and costs the team. Last week, he lost one header, that was a flick on and they scored, this week, he lost a header, and it became a goal.

‘You don’t expect your centre-back to win every single one, it’s not like he’s a little boy, Vestergaard, we should have done better and stopped the cross and those were the 10 seconds they created something.

‘Apart from that I thought that Victor did well.’
