Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that Alexis Sanchez could still have a future at Manchester United despite allowing him to join Inter Milan on loan for the season.

Sanchez has been a colossal disappointment since joining United from Arsenal in January 2018 scoring just five times in 45 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The 30-year-old endured an injury-ravaged 2018-19 campaign and barely featured under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after he replaced Jose Mourinho as manager.

It had been widely assumed that Sanchez’s move to Inter marked the end for his Manchester United career but Solskjaer is adamant that is not the case.

Speaking ahead of United’s game against Southampton, Solskjaer said: ‘I am sure we will see Alexis back.

‘We have just got to hope that he plays regular football for a year now and then he can find his form.

‘I had a chat with him and for me, if I can’t guarantee regular football for Alexis Sanchez it is better for the two of us that he goes and plays in Italy and shows us what we know he is capable of.’

When asked whether Sanchez could still feature in his plans, Solskaer replied: ‘Definitely. This is a loan for a year.

‘We expect them [Sanchez and Chris Smalling who has joined Roma] to be professional. Go there and represent Manchester United as well. We want them to do well.’

Despite enduring a nightmarish time at Old Trafford, Sanchez showed flashes of his quality during the Copa America over the summer, scoring twice as Chile reached the semi-final.

Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte will be hoping that Sanchez can rediscover his form in Serie A alongside his former United colleague Romelu Lukaku who joined permanently this month.

Lukaku has backed Sanchez to come good in Milan, saying: ‘He has had a difficult time at Manchester United. Coming here was the right move, in a good dressing room, where the manager wants winners who can really help the team. He is going to be part of that.

‘He is going to add a lot of competition to the squad we already have. Now it is up to him to show it. I really believe he is going to do well for us. We are here to help him out. Hopefully, he can add that little spark to our team.’
