Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backed to make Harry Maguire decision after impressive Man Utd debut

Maguire put in an encouraging display on his debut fowling his record-breaking £80million move from Leicester as he helped his new side to a thumping 4-0 win over Chelsea last weekend.

And Pallister – a towering centre-back at the heart of the United defence during his days as a player – believes he is exactly what the club needed following last season’s disappointments.

“I think Maguire is such a dominant centre-half, he does the basics really well and also has the ability to bring the ball out and help create things,” he told American Gambler.

“Considering the kind of fee that he came in for and the pressure that he’s under because of that fee, the way he played was a huge bonus for United.”

Manager Solskjaer has named Ashley Young club captain but the 33-year-old’s playing time will be limited this term.

Goalkeeper David de Gea was handed the armband in Young’s absence against Chelsea.

Asked whether Maguire could one day be given the responsibility, he replied: “Yeah I do.

“He’s not afraid to put his head in where it hurts, he wins his tackles, he’s a big lad, a big unit and he has that presence that you need to be a captain and he leads by example.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure if he’d be a screaming and shouting captain, but you can have all different types of captains.

“You can have a Tony Adams or a John Terry who shout and scream, or you can have a [Eric] Cantona who doesn’t shout and scream but just leads by example on the pitch.

“I don’t know which category he falls into, but he looks a figure of authority within the side and I could definitely see him becoming United captain in the future.”

Solskjaer was quick to praise his new signing following his excellent debut display.

“He’s done exactly what we’ve signed him for, his presence in both boxes, his calmness and composure on the ball,” he said.

“He’s a leader and with him, David de Gea and Victor Lindelof they marshalled that back line really well. It is important to have strong personalities at the back.”

Maguire is certain to keep his place when United go to Wolves next Monday night.
