Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka impressed his manager, teammates and fans with an uncompromising performance at the back in Saturday’s derby win over rivals City.

The young right-back was up against danger man Raheem Sterling but completely nullified the winger, preventing him from mustering a single shot on target and successfully completing a match-high five tackles.

Wan-Bissaka locked down the right flank as United held firm at the Etihad, only conceding a late consolation from a corner, and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was keen to highlight what a tremendous job he did.

‘Aaron is playing against… it’s Sterling out there, it’s Mahrez out there, it’s De Bruyne out there. And they just don’t go past him,’ gushed the Norwegian to MUTV.

On the summer signings in general, he added: ‘Absolutely top class, top notch. We know why we have signed these three players.

‘They fit perfectly into the way I want to play football and the coaches how we want to play football and how the club wants to play. They’re humble lads, hard-working, great values.’

As well as receiving praise from Solskjaer, Wan-Bissaka – who was named man of the match for his efforts – was also singled out by goalscorer Marcus Rashford after the game.

‘The one-v-one battles, especially with the full-backs were unbelievable and Aaron especially was top notch,’ said Rashford.

‘Everyone put the work in and worked as hard as they could. In the end that is why we won the game.’

United moved up to fifth place in the Premier League table with their victory over City, having also beaten top-four rivals Tottenham in midweek, and they now face AZ Alkmaar in a battle for top spot in their Europa League group before Everton visit Old Trafford next weekend.
