Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aimed a dig at Tranmere Rovers’ goalkeeper, Scott Davies, after Manchester United’s 6-0 victory over the League One club in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.

Goals from Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood sealed a comfortable win for United, who have secured their place in Monday evening’s fifth-round draw.

Before the match, Davies, who is a Manchester City fan, admitted he was keen to get one over on Solskjaer’s side and claimed he had even received messages from United supporters urging him to win.

‘They always looked down on Man City over the years but now it’s turned around quickly. If myself and my football club can have an influence on them having another bad day then great,’ said the Tranmere goalkeeper.

‘It would be unbelievable. I’ve already had plenty of text messages along those lines, from United supporters as well!’

According to The Guardian, Solskjaer and Davies met outside the changing rooms at Prenton Park after the match and the United manager sarcastically said: ‘Thanks for helping us fire up the fans and the players.’

It’s claimed that Davies ‘laughed off’ Solskjaer’s remark before the United manager went off to conduct his media duties.

Speaking after the match, Solskjaer praised his players for comprehensively avoiding a banana skin against the League One club.

‘You see that pitch and I can understand if players feel I don’t want to play on this,’ the United manager told MUTV.

‘We made sure before the game we had the right attitude. Go out there and do the job.

‘Everyone is waiting for us to fail because it’s set up for that and they were excellent, the players. Of course, early on they had a little burst in the first few minutes.

‘We stood up well against it and when you score three goals in 15 minutes you’re delighted.

‘Different scorers, which also is good, confidence spread around, clean sheet, we scored on a set play so loads of positives.’
