Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Marcus Rashford should relish the prospect of potentially competing for a starting spot at Manchester United, should Erling Haaland arrive in January.

United are said to be at the head of the queue for the teenage striking sensation who has shot to prominence with RB Salzburg in this season’s Champions League.

The 19-year-old was coached by Solskajer during their time together at Molde and the pair, along with his father, former Manchester City midfielder Alf Inge Haaland, are said to have met the United manager in Norway on Friday.

Rashford, meanwhile, has justified Solskjaer’s decision to sell Romelu Lukaku in the summer and led the line with distinction, particularly over the course of the last month during which he has rediscovered his best form following an inconsistent start to the season.

Solskjaer remains keen, however, to strengthen his forward line in January and believes Rashford will only benefit from the prospect increased competition.

He said: ‘I was a player here for 11 years and I can’t tell you how many strikers we signed that were supposedly going to take my place in the team or in the squad.

‘That’s the challenge of being at Manchester United. You are never, ever guaranteed to play every game unless you perform to the absolute best of your ability.

‘That’s down to Marcus, in the end, but what I would say is that he wants this squad to be as strong as possible.

‘We all want to win games, we all want to win trophies and you don’t do that with 11 players.’
