Which shows are coming to the Old Vic theatre online?

In the new move from the Old Vic, called Old Vic Our Shows Screenings, archive performances from the theatre will become available on its YouTube channel.

Similar success has been seen for the National Theatre, who launched their National Theatre At Home platform to rave reviews.

At the moment, only one show has been revealed, which will become available for fans to watch for free on June 5.

The show is A Monster Calls, a show based on Patrick Ness’ novel which won the Best Entertainment and Family award at the Olivier Awards.

The play is family-friendly and is suggested for those aged over 10-years-old, meaning those with children may find this a welcome distraction.

The production, which was seen in 2018, was directed by Sally Cookson and will feature the original cast when it comes to YouTube on June 5 at 7pm until June 11 at the same time.

More information on which other plays will be included will be revealed as they come to light.

What is A Monster Calls?

A Monster Calls is a fantasy novel for young adults in 2011 and sees a 13-year-old boy waking up from nightmares.

Soon he meets a monster outside a tree at the same time every night, who tells him stories, demanding the boy tell his own true stories or he will be eaten.

Between the tales, we meet the boy’s mother who has terminal cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy, while his father is unsupportive of his son, who is also bullied at school.

The story shows grief in a truly powerful way and has been adapted into a film starring Felicity Jones and Sigourney Weaver.

The film came five years after the original novel was released, and gained positive reviews.

It even won an award at the Empire Awards, winning the award for Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy in 2017.

A Monster Calls will be available to stream on the Old Vic YouTube channel from June 5 at 7pm until June 11 at the same time
