O2 down: Mobile network crashes in UK leaving customers fuming

If you’re on the O2 network and trying to make a phone call today, you’re going to run into some trouble.

The network is reporting issues with voice calls across cities including Birmingham, Manchester, London and Bristol.

Complaints on Twitter also point to issues with calls over mobile internet connections too.

According to DownDetector, the issue has been ongoing since 8.45am GMT.

With over 25 million customers across the whole of the UK, that is a lot of people facing frustrations at not being able to make calls.

In a statement on its website, O2 said: “We’re aware of an issue impacting voice services. Our technical teams are investigating. We apologise for any inconvenience. Updates will be shared here as soon as they are available.”

For London in particular, it appears a phone mast isn’t working, which is why service may come and go as the company attempts to fix it.

In Birmingham, the company is reporting that a faulty phone mast means customers will face issues making calls, using the internet, as well as sending and receiving emails.

This isn’t even the first time O2’s phone network has gone down this month, with customers reporting similar problems to do with mobile phone connections on March 13.

Slow and unreliable internet is a major barrier to business growth in cities. In 2017, London mayor Sadiq Khan vowed to improve connectivity across the city by tackling areas of poor internet provision.

With the major phone networks set to unveil their 5G networks, which promises faster connectivity and download speeds that will be better than Wi-Fi, later this year, it’s understandable that customers are frustrated with the network’s issues today.
