Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones turned their hit drama Normal People into a drinking game.

The screen lovers were not able to watch the sex-filled series together when it aired on BBC Three amid the first coronavirus lockdown.

But the pair — who starred as Connell and Marianne — recently met up to watch their critically acclaimed work and Mescal, 24, said it was ‘very special’… and boozy.

‘We ended up playing a drinking game. Every time Connell wouldn’t complete a sentence or Marianne made a statement that made Connell uncomfortable we did a shot,’ he said.

‘We ended up talking over most of it, reflecting on particular days, costume changes, memories.

‘It was very special to get to do that with her (Daisy). The thing we shared — will always share — is so unique,’ the Irish heart-throb added.

Mescal — named GQ’s breakthrough actor of the year — also dubbed overnight fame ‘totally brutal’. ‘At first you think “Oh, this is a bit glamorous,” when someone is taking a picture of you buying ready-to-eat avocados and cigarettes at the off-licence, but soon enough you feel it begins to infiltrate your brain,’ he said.

He also revealed he quit playing Gaelic football when he was ‘slapped pretty hard across the face and my jaw snapped’.

The GQ Men Of The Year Awards 2020, with Hugo Boss, will be streamed on GQ’s YouTube channel on Thursday at 8pm.

Lew’s keeping his pose clean … just about

Lark side of the Lew: Capaldi pulled a series of funny poses as he arrived at AMAs (Picture: Getty)

Lewis Capaldi might have been snubbed for three gongs at Sunday’s American Music Awards but he made sure he was the winner of the best red carpet pose.

While the likes of Cara Delevingne and new couple Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly pouted down the barrel of the lens, the Scottish singer cut some different shapes as he arrived at Los Angeles’s Microsoft Theater in high spirits.

But the 24-year-old’s joy slipped away as he watched rivals win silverware in the new artist, favourite artist and favourite pop/rock song categories, which his track Someone You Loved was nominated for.

Before arriving at his first showbiz bash post lockdown, Lew blamed ‘idle hands’ as he revealed he piled on a stone while living with his parents.

‘I’ve put on 14lb. I’ve put on love handles. It’s fine,’ he spilled recently.

Rival Dua Lipa pipped him to the best song gong for track Don’t Start Now and Harry Styles flew the flag for Britain as record Fine Line scooped the best album prize.

Taylor Swift was named artist of the year and three-time AMA winner Justin Bieber debuted new song Monster — a duet with Shawn Mendes.

Things are locking up as fallen Depp wins a gong

Johnny Depp took a unique approach to prove he is still a winner by posing behind bars to accept his latest film award.

His career has been torpedoed since losing a £5million defamation ‘wife beater’ trial at the High Court, but despite being axed from the Fantastic Beasts franchise he remains in the winner’s circle.

Depp, 57, sent a snap of himself in a jail cell in the Bahamas to accept a gong at the Camerimage festival in Poland. It was given for his role in Minamata, where he plays a photographer documenting the effects of mercury poisoning in Japan in the 1970s. In a note, Depp — whose future in the Pirates of the Caribbean films is ‘unsure’ — wrote: ‘I have always been someone who needs to not know what is coming next.’

TikTok titan Derulo’s dinner-time giveaway

TikTok king Jason Derulo paid the bill for a restaurant full of diners to share the cash he is raking in on the social media platform.

The Savage Love singer gave himself a pat on the back as he revealed his generous side.

‘I was celebrating a No.1 song right, and I was at a restaurant and it’s Covid time,’ he said when recalling the incident.

‘It’s a very expensive restaurant. If I can take a second and dig deep in my pocket and have a night for the entire restaurant, I think that’s a beautiful thing,’ the 31-year-old US singer/songwriter added.

At home, he told Hits Radio: ‘I don’t have a million cars, and there’s a bunch of cars on my driveway that I don’t drive but, if I could create happiness for myself and people around me, I think that’s really important.’

A chart banger and mash on Matt’s Christmas list

Matt Lucas says Manchester United and England footballer Marcus Rashford’s free school meals campaign has inspired him to record another charity song.

The Bake Off host, 46, will release Merry Christmas, Baked Potato on Thursday, with proceeds going to food poverty charity FareShare.

It follows the success of his FeedNHS single, Thank You Baked Potato, earlier this year.

‘Santa Baked Potato’s on his way! I hope my silly song will put a smile on your face,’ he said. ‘Like so many people, I’ve been incredibly inspired by Marcus’s campaign for FareShare, so all profits (from the track) will go to the charity.

‘I hope the song will bring a bit of a bounce in what is sure to be a challenging Christmas. All I ask for in return is that Marcus Rashford doesn’t score against Arsenal ever again. Thank you.’

Let’s celebrate! Gigi’s already feeling festive

It might still be November but Gigi Hadid couldn’t wait to celebrate Christmas with her and Zayn Malik’s little bub.

The US model showed off a new snap of the couple’s daughter and gave fans a glimpse of their first family Christmas tree.

Explaining why she has jumped the festive gun, Gigi said: ‘She’s da bestie so she got Christmas decorations early.’ The 25-year-old beauty also revealed how she is trucking along with the sleepless nights, saying life as a new mum has become a ‘whole new kind of busy & tired’.

The early Christmas display for their little one, who arrived in September, comes after Gigi and Pillowtalk singer Zayn, 27, showed off family snaps at Halloween last month.

Justin Bieber penned a sweet birthday message to wife Hailey, insisting he is ‘completely and utterly obsessed’ with the model.

To celebrate his bride turning 24, Biebs, 26, wrote on Instagram: ‘My eyes are 4 you. My heart is 4 you. My soul is 4 you. My love is 4 you. I am Home wherever you are. You are my safe place. My biggest dream is growing old with you. I can’t believe you are mine forever. Happy birthday.’

The Grammy-winner also posted snaps of the pair, which Hailey shared on her page and captioned: ‘24 feeling so grateful. Thank you for all the love and kind messages.’

Cancer-hit Tom’s on track for comeback

Tom Parker, here with wife Kelsey, is staying focused on his pop career (Picture: Instagram)

Tom Parker is refusing to let his brain cancer diagnosis derail his pop career.

The Wanted singer is releasing new tunes after teaming up with former X Factor contestant Ollie Marland to form a duo called Lost + Found.

They’ll soon be dropping song Into You, which pays homage to Tamia’s 1998 hit So Into You.

Parker, 32, is living life to the fullest and became a dad for the second time just two weeks after revealing his tragic inoperable cancer nightmare.

Staying positive with his new music turn, he and Ollie said: ‘To be releasing Into You amidst all the madness and a global pandemic just feels like a breath of fresh air.’
