Noel Fielding: ‘It’s scary’ Great British Bake Off host addresses 'tense' Channel 4 show

Noel Fielding, 46, joined the The Great British Bake Off as a host when the show moved from BBC One across to Channel 4. The controversial move saw original presenters Mary Berry, 64, Sue Perkins, 49, and Mel Giedroyc, 51, quit the show in protest. However, original judge Paul Hollywood, 53, chose to stay with the series and is currently joined by his co-stars Sandi Toksvig, 61, Prue Leith, 79, and Noel. The latter has now opened up about his experience being on the show and admitted the pressure to perform as a presenter with Sandi was “tense”.

In a candid interview in Radio Times, Noel divulged: “The first year was very tense.

“The pressure was scary. We needed it to work as the whole nation loved the show. We just wanted to get through it alive.”

The comedian felt the public saw his newly appointed role as the “wild card” and in his own words a “national crisis.”

The stand-up comic said: “I don’t think I realised how big the show was.

“I realised it was like a national crisis. ‘This vampire guy, who is he?’ Everyone knew Sandi could do it, but I was the wild card.”

Fortunately, for the presenter the new judging line-up proved to be a winning combination with viewers.

Noel admitted the following year the show ran more smoothly and the team felt more relaxed.

He added: “The second year we relaxed slightly. This year it’s gone to how it should be.”

Elsewhere, judge Prue Leith recently opened up about her secrets to staying fit and well.

Speaking to The Mirror’s Sunday People, she spilled: “All my life I have wanted to lose a stone but I could never lose it!

“But I do exercise. I have a personal trainer who comes once to twice a week.”

The Great British Bake Off is set to return to viewers screens tonight.

The full line-up of amateur bakers was confirmed earlier this week, including a fashion designer and a veterinary surgeon.

Their ages range from 20 to 56, making it the youngest group of bakers ever to grace the show.

Over half of the contestants are in their 20s.

Although there was a huge backlash to Bake Off’s move from BBC to Channel 4, it has continued to be a hit with viewers, with the new presenters and judge settling right in to their roles over the past two series.

The Great British Bake Off 2019 airs tonight on Channel 4 at 8pm.
