Cyberpunk 2077 is still slated to release in September, but a next gen version of the game won’t launch alongside the new consoles.
Towards the end of last year, CD Projekt suggested that it could possibly bring its next major title, Cyberpunk 2077, to the next generation of consoles, namely the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
During a recent Q&A session, however, senior vice president of business development Michal Nowakowski seemed to confirm that it would be available on the new Xbox, at least as a cross-gen title.
‘In terms of Microsoft’s console, like I said, we have officially confirmed both the update and the cross-gen availability, meaning that you’ll be able to play the game from the get-go on the next-gen,’ said Nowakowski, as reported by VGC.
This also means the game will be part of Microsoft’s Smart Delivery service, which allows players to purchase a game for either Xbox One or Xbox Series X and then get the other version for free.
‘A patch will be available to everybody who purchases the Xbox One version here and now from the get-go, once that update is live, they’ll be able to download that free of charge.’
Nowakowski did mention a ‘full-blown next-gen version’ of the game, which sounded as if he was referring to a completely separate release made specifically for the new consoles, but a spokesperson later clarified that he was simply referring to the aforementioned Xbox Series X upgrade.
As a result, Nowakowski’s statement about its release time means we shouldn’t expect to see the next gen upgrades being released this year.
‘However, when it comes to a proper, full-blown next-gen version, that’s going to come later, we haven’t announced when and I don’t have a new comment here on that,’ he added.
In addition, he was unable to confirm that Cyberpunk 2077 would see a separate released on PlayStation 5.
‘There’s no official announcement coming from PlayStation so we really can’t confirm or deny anything. It’s PlayStation that first needs to address these issues and then we’re happy to make a comment, but we can’t jump the gun ahead of them.’
It seems unlikely that Cyberpunk wouldn’t also come out on PlayStation 5, but the lack of a service like Smart Delivery and no guarantee that the PlayStation 4 version will be backwards compatible puts it in a different position to the Xbox.
According to the latest financial statement from the studio, president and CEO Adam Kiciński mentioned that the game is still on track to release this September, reconfirming that CD Projekt Red has no intention of delaying the game again.
Studio head Adam Badowski even confirmed on Twitter that Cyberpunk has now been rated by the vast majority of ratings boards. This does seem to suggest that the game will most definitely meet its release date and we won’t be seeing another The Last Of Us Part 2 situation.
As far as DLC is concerned, Kiciński has shed a bit more light on that as well. We already knew DLC was planned, but he has now said that we can expect to see some details about it a few months ahead of the game’s release, similar to how CD Projekt handled The Witcher 3.
Cyberpunk 2077 will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on 17 September.
