Nine Perfect Strangers: First trailer draws mixed reaction to Hulu thriller 'Underwhelmed'

Hulu have lined up a stellar cast for their upcoming miniseries, Nine Perfect Strangers. Based on the 2018 bestseller by Liane Moriarty, the Nicole Kidman-led drama promises twists and turns in every episode, but will TV fans be tuning in after the latest trailer?

Viewers aren’t sure what to make from the intriguing new trailer for Hulu’s upcoming miniseries, Nine Perfect Strangers.

From the creators of Big Little Lies and The Undoing, Nicole Kidman stars as Masha, the mysterious host of a health and wellness centre which could have sinister ulterior motives.

Although Liana Moriarty’s original novel became a New York Times bestseller, the trailer’s strange tone and stacked cast drew mixed reactions from audiences.

Some admitted to being disappointed by the extended look at the upcoming series after initially being intrigued by the first teaser trailer.

On Reddit, one user said: “Shame. The first teaser really had me hyped for this series.

“This trailer, on the other hand, left me underwhelmed.”

While another was concerned the small screen adaptation would be taking considerable liberties with the plot of the source material.

The series follows nine individuals staying at Masha’s Tranquillum House, a wellness centre dedicated to completely transforming its guests.

Despite the vague premise of the new series, fans were still eager to see the group of A-Listers on screen together.

Nine Perfect Strangers marks the first time Kidman and McCarthy have worked together, and also features key roles for up-and-comers Melvin Gregg and Samara Weaving.

In the YouTube comments for the new trailer, one viewer said: “Regina Hall and Nicole Kidman on the same screen? Yes please.”

Although another baffled commenter wrote: “I have no idea what this is about.

“Looks like Biggest Loser if it was a horror movie psycho thriller where someone might die! Is this a TV show or movie?”

More still slammed the show’s marketing for its limited use of TV breakout Manny Jacinto, fresh from his star-making turn in NBC sitcom The Good Place.

When the new poster was released, one Twitter user said: “Manny looking that good and he in the dead back.

“We better get separate character posters because manny didn’t serve with that mustache and s**t for the photograph to be all tiny.”

Hopefully the series itself puts an end to concerns when it premieres the first three episodes next month.

Nine Perfect Strangers premieres on Wednesday, August 18 on Hulu.
