Nigel Pearson has thanked Watford fans for their support after he was sacked as Hornets manager with just two games left to play this season.

Watford were seven points away from Premier League survival when they appointed Pearson in December and are now three points above the drop zone.

Pearson was Watford’s third manager of the 2019/20 season and it appears a rapid and severe breakdown in his relationship with the club hierarchy led to his surprise dismissal.

Watford fired Javi Gracia in September and Quique Sanchez Flore in December and Pearson has now addressed his surprise exit from the London club.

He said: ‘I’ve been overwhelmed by the well-wishes I’ve received from Watford supporters and the football community.

‘Thank you all for your kind messages. Although not able to finish the task I was brought in to achieve, I wish Watford all the best for their final two games. Cheers, Nige.’

Pearson fumed with his players after the defeat to West Ham on Friday left them just above the relegation zone.

Watford could still go down with two games left and welcome Manchester City to Vicarage Road on Wednesday before their last match of the season against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Pearson’s assistant Craig Shakespeare was also dismissed from his position and Watford have appointed Under 23s coach Hayden Mullins as interim coach with goalkeeping coach Graham Stack as his assistant.

Watford released a short statement on Sunday offering no details about why Pearson was sacked.
