But the campaign hit a rocky road after its big blue bus – emblazoned with the words “fighting back, follow The Brexit Party” – crashed into a hedge off the busy A470 near the Brecon Beacons in Wales.

It’s believed to have come off the road on Saturday evening, before motorists spotted it being towed away on Sunday morning.

Tweeting a picture of the crash, BBC weather presenter Sue Charles tweeted: “Driving through the Brecon Beacons tonight.

“Was expecting a few by-election posters but surprised to see what looked like a Brexit Party bus crashed into a hedge.

“Got out to check all was ok. No one around, just an abandoned bus, doors open, side-on, blocking a lay-by.

“Police were helpful – didn’t think it was a crash or an accident, possibly a bizarre publicity stunt – but were investigating.”

The post racked up hundreds of comments on social media within just a hours.

Byron Holmes tweeted: “We know that Brexit is a car crash but a bus crash? Wow! Better than I expected.”

Ron Reid posted: “It’s a perfect metaphor. Vacant and abandoned.”

Another joked: “Wheels have come off the Brexit bus a lot earlier than anticipated!”

Councillor Rhys Mills commented: “We passed it on the way home. Looked like the back suspension had collapsed.”

While Larnold Cooper said: “Farage must have been involved. He has a reputation for fleeing the scene.”

In May Farage was left trapped on the bus after he was surrounded by protesters holding milkshakes in Rochester, Kent.

He refused to leave the vehicle just days after he had the drink thrown over him in Newcastle.

The Brexit Party and North Wales Police will be contacted for comment.
