Nicola Sturgeon accused of double standards on exits

Tories hit out at the First Minister’s “double-standards” on the impact of separation as she claimed leaving the Union would be better planned than Brexit. Ms Sturgeon confirmed she still wants another Scexit referendum even if the vote to leave the EU is overturned. She has previously argued the 2016 decision to quit the bloc is a “material change of circumstances” to justify a ballot. But yesterday the SNP leader suggested this was no longer the case, describing Brexit as merely an “illustration” of the need to end the 312-year-old partnership. And during a General Election campaign event Ms Sturgeon also failed to give a timescale for the transition to a breakaway Scottish state.

In the 2013 White Paper, the SNP Government said this could be achieved in just 18 months.

The event in Dundee came hours after she came under fire for downplaying the risks of a hard border with England, or having to join the Euro.

In an interview with ITV she also suggested Scotland’s £12.6 billion deficit could be easily managed in the event of independence.

Paul Masterton, Scottish Tory candidate for East Renfrewshire said: “Nicola Sturgeon spends every waking hour desperately talking up the downsides of the UK’s departure from the EU. Yet, when it comes to Scotland leaving our own Union, she suddenly can’t see what the fuss is all about.”

“The First Minister is utterly deluded. What’s remarkable is she doesn’t even seem to recognise her own double standards.”

Pamela Nash, of Scotland in Union, said: “It is laughable that Nicola Sturgeon has still not admitted that Scotland could not leave the UK in 18 months, when it is taking at least nine years to create structures to devolve a number of welfare powers.”
