Nicki Minaj criticises Grammys for 2012 Best New Artist snub amid The Weeknd controversy: ‘They gave it to the white man’

However, there were some surprising omissions from the nominees, with fans questioning why The Weeknd was not nominated for a single award despite the success of his album After Hours and its lead single “Blinding Lights”.

Just hours after the 2021 nominations were revealed, Minaj reminisced about the 2012 Grammy Awards, when she received three nominations for her debut album Pink Friday, including nods for Best New Artist and Best Rap Album.

“Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on billboard & bigger first week than any female rapper in the last decade – went on to inspire a generation,” she tweeted.

“They gave it to the white man Bon Iver.”

For the 2021 Grammys, the Album of the Year category has proven to be a particular sore spot for music fans, who were disappointed to see BTS, Lady Gaga and The Weeknd not make the final cut.

Hitting out at the Recording Academy on Twitter, The Weeknd – who was recently announced as the Super Bowl halftime show performer – tweeted: “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency.”

Earlier this week, the musician, real name Abel Tesfaye, won three awards at the 2020 American Music Awards.
