NHS to ban Weetabix and All Bran in hospitals as they are too expensive

HOSPITAL patients will no longer be able to order Weetabix for breakfast in a radical cost-cutting plan by the NHS.

Health Minister Stephen Hammond claims the NHS could save up to a third if they purchase breakfast in bulk.

Hospital chiefs are being urged to purchase breakfast through the NHS Supply Chain rather then purchase locally.

NHS supply will also stop buying Weetabix and Bran Flakes because of the higher prices.

Patients will also lose out on fruit and nut chocolate Alpen cereal bars under the new plans.

A Department of Health source told the Mirror branded products would be swapped for like-for-like items which offer better value.

Mr Hammond said some NHS trusts are paying as much 40 per cent more for tea than others.

He said: “The NHS pays wildly different amounts for simple things like tea, beans, and jam. By signing up, hospitals could save thousands of pounds.”
