Monumental Sports & Entertainment, owner of the NHL’s Washington Capitals, today announced the formation of a Caps Gaming sub-brand that will focus on hockey esports.

Caps Gaming will host the $15K Caps Gaming Showcase, a 6v6 tournament in EA Sports’ NHL 20 on Xbox One. Online play will begin in December and ultimately culminate in the top four teams competing in a live semifinals and finals in Washington, D.C., in late February 2020.

Additionally, Caps Gaming has signed NHL 20 player John “JohnWayne” Casagranda as a streamer, making him the first player signed by an NHL organization. Casagranda will stream via the Caps Gaming Twitch channel from mid-November through June 2020.

Leidos, a Fortune 500 technology and engineering services company, will be Caps Gaming’s presenting sponsor. The company, which is based just outside Washington, D.C., will present the Caps Gaming Showcase and will have its branding integrated within the team’s Twitch streams.

“Esports is a key initiative for us at Monumental, and we are thrilled to add Caps Gaming to the family as we continue to tap into a new generation of fans,” said Monumental Sports & Entertainment Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Zach Leonsis, in a release. “We are excited to welcome John to The District, and look forward to hosting the premier NHL competition with the Caps Gaming Showcase in early December.”

Monumental Sports & Entertainment also owns the NBA’s Washington Wizards, WNBA’s Washington Mystics, and NBA G League’s Capital City Go-Go. This is the company’s second esports brand, along with the NBA 2K League’s Wizards District Gaming.
