NHL roundup: Ovechkin scores 700th goal but Devils beat Caps


Alex Ovechkin became the eighth NHL player to reach 700 goals, but the milestone was not enough as Damon Severson scored with 1:59 remaining to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 victory over the visiting Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon.

Ovechkin made history 4:50 into the third period when he ripped a shot past New Jersey goalie Mackenzie Blackwood from the right circle. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nick Jensen were given assists on the play, and that tied the game 2-all.

The Washington bench poured on to the ice and hugged Ovechkin, who received an ovation from the New Jersey crowd.

The Devils got the last laugh as Severson fired a high shot past goalie Ilya Samsonov just after Washington finished killing off two penalties. It was the first road loss this season for Samsonov, who had won his first 10 away from home.

Hurricanes 6, Maple Leafs 3

Warren Foegele scored two goals, emergency goaltender David Ayres — a Zamboni driver — made nine saves and visiting Carolina defeated Toronto.

Ayres took over at 11:19 of the second period after Carolina’s second goaltender of the game was injured when Toronto’s Kyle Clifford ran into him. Starting goalie James Reimer was injured in the first period.

Lucas Wallmark, Nino Niederreiter, Teuvo Teravainen and Martin Necas also scored for Carolina. Alex Kerfoot, John Tavares and Pierre Engvall scored for Toronto. Tyson Barrie and Kasperi Kapanen each added two assists.

Canucks 9, Bruins 3

Tyler Toffoli scored his first two goals since being acquired in a trade with Los Angeles earlier in the week, and he added an assist as host Vancouver put an end to league-leading Boston’s five-game winning streak.

Defenseman Troy Stecher had a goal and two assists and J.T. Miller had three helpers for the Canucks, who snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-4-2 in their past nine games.

Boston’s David Pastrnak scored twice, breaking a tie with Toronto’s Auston Matthews for the NHL lead in goals. Pastrnak’s third-period goal was his 45th of the season.

Flyers 4, Jets 2

Scott Laughton scored two goals, Sean Couturier and Tyler Pitlick added one goal apiece and host Philadelphia defeated Winnipeg.

Justin Braun contributed three assists for the Flyers, who won their third in a row. Philadelphia goaltender Carter Hart made 27 saves.

Patrik Laine and Josh Morrissey scored for the Jets, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped 26 shots.

Sabers 5, Penguins 2

Captain Jack Eichel scored twice and Sam Reinhart had a goal and an assist as visiting Buffalo recorded a victory over Pittsburgh.

Zemgus Girgensons and Jeff Skinner also scored and defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen added two assists for Buffalo, which has won four of its last five games. Goaltender Carter Hutton made 41 saves to improve to 5-1-0 in his career against Pittsburgh.

Evgeni Malkin scored both goals for the Penguins, who have lost back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 29-30.

Predators 4, Blue Jackets 3 (SO)

Rocco Grimaldi scored in the eighth round of a shootout to give Nashville a win over visiting Columbus.

Nashville goalie Juuse Saros saved 40 of 43 shots during regulation and overtime, then stopped six of eight shots during the extended shootout to earn his 27th victory of the season.

Columbus is 0-3-5 over its last eight games, marking the team’s longest winless streak since the 2015-16 season.

Rangers 3, Sharks 2

Rookie Igor Shesterkin made 44 saves, Jesper Fast scored twice and New York continued its surge with a victory over visiting San Jose.

Shesterkin made 21 saves in the opening 20 minutes, when the Rangers were outshot 22-3. He stopped Evander Kane twice on breakaways in the opening 40 minutes and made 10 saves on Sharks defenseman Brent Burns.

Shesterkin won his seventh straight game and improved to 9-1 since making his NHL debut Jan. 7. He also made two point-blank stops on Patrick Marleau before Fast scored the tiebreaking goal with 13:06 remaining in the third.

Coyotes 7, Lightning 3

Clayton Keller and Conor Garland each scored twice and assisted on the final goal of the game, and Arizona scored four unanswered goals to beat Tampa Bay in Glendale, Ariz.

Garland and Keller scored 70 seconds apart in the first period. Garland’s goal, off a rebound of a miss from the opposite side of the net with 2:24 to play, was his team-leading 21st of the season.

Carl Soderberg, Brad Richardson and Derek Stepan also scored for Arizona, with two assists from Taylor Hall.

Golden Knights 5, Panthers 3

Reilly Smith scored two third-period goals, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 saves as Vegas defeated Florida in Las Vegas for its fifth straight victory.

Tomas Nosek had a goal and an assist, and Max Pacioretty and William Carrier and also scored goals for Vegas, which increased its Pacific Division lead to two points over the Vancouver Canucks. The Golden Knights, who also got two assists from Paul Stastny, improved to 8-2-1 since their bye week break and 9-3-2 under head coach Peter DeBoer.

Mike Hoffman and Evgenii Dadonov each had a goal and an assist, and Aleksi Saarela also scored a goal for Florida. Sam Montembeault finished with 34 saves.

Canadiens 3, Senators 0

Max Domi scored a pair of first-period goals and Carey Price made 30 saves for his 48th career shutout as visiting Montreal blanked Ottawa.

Paul Byron recorded a goal with an assist for Montreal, which has won back-to-back games following an 0-4-1 slide.

Veteran Craig Anderson, again subject of trade rumors ahead of Monday’s deadline, stopped 34 shots for Ottawa, which dropped its second straight.

Avalanche 2, Kings 1 (SO)

Joonas Donskoi scored the lone goal in a shootout on a night goalie Pavel Francouz needed just 20 saves as Colorado rallied for a victory over Los Angeles.

Ryan Graves scored a second-period goal as the Avalanche won consecutive games in Southern California. Saturday’s victory came a day after a 1-0 victory at the Anaheim Ducks. Colorado is on a three-game winning streak that followed a three-game losing streak.

Austin Wagner scored on a penalty shot in the first period for the Kings, who lost to the Avalanche one week after defeating them in the outdoor Stadium Series at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The Kings have earned a point in four of their last five games.
