NHL 20: The best goalies

When talking about hockey it is easy to get caught up admiring the forwards with their stick skills, flashy goals, or celebrations, or the defenseman and their hits. It’s time to give some love to the goalies.

A goalie can be one of the biggest factors in any single game. With the prowess of so many shooters, a truly great goalie is often the main difference between any two teams, and the best often find themselves on some of the best teams.

So, who are the NHL 20’s best goalies?

Andrei Vasilevskiy, Tampa Bay Lightning (91 OVR)

Last year’s regular season champs were record breaking, and having a player like Vasilevskiy in the net is a large reason why. As a result he is the best goalie in the game.

Good luck scoring against him, not one of his goalie ratings is lower than 90, and four of the seven are 92 and above. What’s more, at 25, he’ll be around for your franchise for years as the best goalie in the game.

Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens (91 OVR)

Price has been the best NHL goalie, or at least one of the best, for a while now, and it hasn’t changed.

Unlike Vasilevskiy, he has one rating, glove high, dip below 90, down to 88. However, he also has ratings that exceed Vasilevskiy. 94 stick low and 93 five hole stand out, but 92 and 91 in the rest of his goalie ratings are wildly impressive.

Tuukka Rask, Boston Bruins (90 OVR)

TUUUUK! Rask was integral to the Bruins’ success last year in reaching the Stanley Cup Finals.

One thing is for sure with Rask, he is steady. All of his ratings a great, across the board. There isn’t a situation in which he is out of his depth or at a disadvantage. Rated 90 or 89 in every goalie rating, you can rely on Rask to hold down the fort.

John Gibson, Anaheim Ducks (90 OVR)

For anyone looking to trade for a star goalie, or take control of a team with no worries in in the net, Gibson and the Anaheim Ducks are a pretty good bet.

Not only do they have the game’s (tied) second highest rated goalie, but he is only 26 and can absolutely develop into the game’s best goalie. His 92 angles, 91 breakaway, glove low and stick low stand out.  

Sergei Bobrovsky, Florida Panthers (90 OVR)

Bobrovsky was one of the big ticket names in free agency and the Panthers picked him up for seven years, he has had a slow start to the season, but there is a reason he was so highly coveted.

At least in game, you won’t have the issues he is currently having, or had in October. Only two ratings are below 90 – they’re both 89 instead (glove high and stick high) – and the rest are all 91. Bobrovsky will be a wall in the net.

Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals (89 OVR)

The Capitals’ number one goalie for years, now could be approaching the end of his time in the capital. Nevertheless, he remains one of the best goalies in NHL 20.

Considering his flaw is 89 glove high, and everything else is 90 or higher, including 91 angles, Holtby is still great in game. If you are playing franchise mode and you don’t play as the Capitals, he only has a year remaining on his deal, so is potentially a great target in free agency.

Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators (88 OVR)

Rinne is one of the oldest players in the NHL, but that hasn’t gotten in the way of him being one of the game’s best goalies.

Under contract for at least two more years, you should get some time with him in your net before you’re forced to move on. But, while you have him you won’t have to worry – you’ll have one of the steadiest goalies in the game, with 90 on every goalie rating aside from 88 stick high.
