Neymar defends diving to Brazilian legend Ronaldo and claims it is to avoid injury

NEYMAR has bizarrely defended his persistent diving while speaking to Brazilian legend Ronaldo – saying he does it to avoid injury.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward, 27, has suggested he throws himself to the ground and rolls around repeatedly in a bid to protect himself.

Neymar – who was globally ridiculed at last summer’s World Cup for diving – claims he was too skinny as a youngster and would throw himself to the ground before he was forced.

Kicking off the discussion, Ronaldo said: “Your playing style has been controversial more than once.

“But I spoke to your father and he said you do it so you don’t injure yourself, because of your body.

“He told me that it’s to defend yourself physically, and since you were thinner than everyone the best way to do that was to fall easier.

“Let them say what they want.”

And Neymar agreed with the claim, replying: “If I didn’t do it, I’d be injured now.

“You have to protect yourself because nobody is going to do it for you.”

Ironically, Neymar is currently injured after picking up a hamstring strain during last weekend’s 1-1 friendly draw with Nigeria.

The PSG star was seen clutching his leg as he hobbled off in yet another injury blow.

Neymar had already missed four games for the Ligue 1 champions this term, on the back of being absent for 48 matches in the past two seasons alone.

It is a blow for all involved, after the Brazil ace bounced back from his rocky summer in fine style, scoring four goals in just five league games for PSG.

The former Barcelona star publicly stated his desire to go “home” to the Nou Camp – with PSG fans left fuming.

Neymar recently opened up after he was booed on his return to club duty.

Despite that, the Brazilian has had a three-metre statue of himself erected in Paris.
