Neymar compares himself to Lionel Messi because he's "one of the most important players"

Brazil forward Neymar says he’s like Lionel Messi because he’s “one of the most important players” in his national team.

Neymar played alongside Messi at Barcelona, where he won a single Champions League trophy, before moving to Paris Saint-Germain for a world record transfer fee of £198million.

The forward will represent Brazil for the 100th time on Thursday when they take on Senegal in a friendly.

Ahead of the match he highlighted his importance to Brazil, explaining that he takes it upon himself to shoulder the expectations of his country.

“I have been in the national team for 10 years. I have always been one of the most important players and one of the players that puts everything on his back. I never backed out of that,” Neymar said.

“I have always carried out my role in the team well. When a player reaches a certain level, it is normal to get different treatment. Messi gets treated differently at Barcelona.

“Is it because he is more handsome? No. It is because of everything he does. It is part of football.”

He added: “I am happy in the national team and I am happy at my club. Everyone knows what happened in the summer window and how I wanted to leave.

“I will give them 100 per cent so we can achieve great things. If I am doing well in my club I will make it to the national team.”
