Newfound Love for The Last Jedi Gets #ThankYouRianJohnson Trending on Twitter

The Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy continues to divide both critics, audiences and fans as The Rise of Skywalker has now hit cinemas to mixed reviews, contradictory interpretations, love, hate and everything in between. This divisiveness began with Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi back in 2017, but it seems that in the wake of Abrams’ Skywalker saga finale, the fanbase has found a new appreciation for Johnson and what he brought to the galaxy.

You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, and now #ThankYouRianJohnson has begun trending on social media with fans heaping praise on Johnson’s divisive installment.

“#thankyourianjohnson for giving me a Luke Skywalker who’s been through some shit. Being a hero isn’t easy and carrying the weight of the future is hard for anyone. Luke loses his way and finds his way back. It’s a journey so many with depression fight and it matters.”

“Thank you, Rian, for giving me the Tico sisters, porgs, and a Star Wars story I love so much. #thankyourianjohnson.”

There have also been many who have been praising Rian Johnson for the feminist bent that The Last Jedi had, with the inclusion of a variety of new, female characters being hailed as one of the movie’s strongest additions to the Star Wars franchise.

“#thankyourianjohnson for telling a story women relate to. I felt so heard, so respected, so seen by TLJ. From Rey, to Rose, to Holdo, to Leia, women were there and they felt real. Tlj made me feel like Star Wars was for me, for women. Thank you @rianjohnson.”

“#ThankYouRianJohnson for telling a story that resonated with women, for empowering us through Rey. Even if we were “nobodies”.”

“#thankyourianjohnson for including Carrie Fisher in your writing on The Last Jedi, for always placing women front and center and in every single group shot frame in a Star Wars movie, for understanding our needs and caring.”

Of course, it was this perceived ‘social justice warrior’ agenda that many of the more toxic fans pounced upon at the time, but it certainly sounds like Johnson’s approach mattered a lot to many. The praise continues as fans thank Johnson for his creative decisions, and bringing something a little different to this decade-spanning series.

“#thankyourianjohnson for caring about the myth of star wars.”

“#thankyourianjohnson for giving us a film that challenged us to think differently and creatively about Star Wars, and ourselves. proud to be your fan @rianjohnson.”

“#thankyourianjohnson for, among a whole other bunch of shit, this scene. you coulda gone immediately with sound but you dropped it out so that we could really experience the amazingness visually & hear ourselves think ‘did she really do that?!'”

Many fans have taken umbrage with Abrams’ attempts at backtracking on many of Johnson’s ideas and reveals, and it no doubt partly because of that that the #ThankYouRianJohnson hashtag is on the rise. Within the hashtag are countless messages about how The Last Jedi has inspired, empowered and re-awakened people’s love of Star Wars and these iconic characters. Of course, there are still many who believe the movie is a cinematic disease. This comes from Twitter.
