Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has been told that moving to Manchester United would be a ‘bad idea’ at this stage of his career.

Longstaff enjoyed an impressive season at St James’ Park, amassing 16 appearances after making his Premier League debut in December to help Newcastle finish 13th.

His performances caught the attention of a number of clubs and Manchester United are believed to be interested in bringing the 21-year-old to Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign a number of young and talented players this summer after a dismal conclusion to the 2018-19 campaign and Longstaff fits the bill.

But former Premier League star Kevin Kilbane believes the midfielder would be making a mistake by joining the Red Devils.

He told Off The Ball: ‘A good player [but] it’s still too early in my mind.

‘He’s not played enough football, certainly at the top level. The games that I have seen him play, very good footballer and a technically good footballer.

‘[But] it’s too early for that one. Bad idea for now.’

Ex-England defender Danny Mills, speaking last week, said Longstaff would ‘regret it’ if he left Newcastle to join Manchester United.

‘United already have Scott McTominay, a similar type of player and age to Longstaff,’ he said. ‘If you are a young player like Longstaff, you need to be sure you are joining a club where you can develop.

‘Does Solskjaer have a record of developing players? No. Does Rafa Benitez, assuming he stays at Newcastle? Yes.

‘Longstaff should think very carefully before leaving Newcastle, where he is likely to play regularly next season.

‘He’ll regret it if he moves to Manchester United, where he might not play as much.’
