Newcastle fan's celebrations cut short as Matt Ritchie kicks corner flag where it hurts

A fan’s celebrations were cut short after Newcastle United beat Chelsea – because Matt Ritchie accidentally kicked the corner flag into his genitals.

Newcastle fans were delirious when Isaac Hayden fired a last-gasp winner against Chelsea at St James’ Park on Saturday.

But pleasure quickly turned to pain for one Toon supporter in the front rows when the flag kicked by Ritchie hit him right where it hurts.

Videos capturing the incident soon went viral, and Newcastle United posted one with the message: “Apologies from Matt Ritchie… and the corner flag”.

In one video the man can be seen unable to get up as his fellow Newcastle fans stand to clap their team off following the injury-time winner.

Twitter users saw the funny side, with one replying to Newcastle’s tweet with “great through ball” while another tweeted “Howay the nads”.

Others called for the stricken supporter to receive some payback for his pain, with one Newcastle fan saying: “Give him some signed stuff for taking one for the team there.”

Ironically, Ritchie has been kept out of action for most of the season by injury.

He came off after just 48 minutes during Newcastle’s Carabao Cup game against Leicester back in August, and only made his comeback as a substitute in the FA Cup third-round draw at Rochdale earlier this month.

He started Newcastle’s replay win 10 days later, and came on after just 12 minutes of Saturday’s game following an injury to Jetro Willems.

No doubt Toon fans will have been pleased to see the 30-year-old Scotland international back in action in the Premier League – although one supporter might have been grateful if he’d had to wait another game for his comeback.
