New Year’s Eve music: What are the BEST songs for a NYE party? Favourites revealed

New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration and looking forward to a new year – and this time, a new decade. There have been some great songs this year but when the clock is close to midnight, you may want to listen to something which will truly represent the joy of a new year. So which songs are the best to play at a New Year’s party which ring in the start of 2020?

New Year’s Eve – Tom Waits

For fans of some scratchy vocals and some folky vibes, Tom Waits is the one.

This song discusses some of the events which could take place at a NYE party, but mainly chronicles his attempts to keep someone away from overindulging in the festivities.

However, at one point the whole group at the NYE party, whatever state they may be in, sing Auld Lang Syne in traditional fashion.

1999 – Prince

While Prince may have been singing about the dawning of the millennium, his NYE anthem is a sure-fire party starter.

Admittedly, the lyrics seem to suggest the impending year will be full of “judgement day” like destruction, however he has a clear message.

That message? Party like it’s 1999, or what he considered to be the end of the world, which is certainly worth doing on NYE.

What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve – Ella Fitzgerald

This tune has been recorded by a huge number of artists, including 500 Days of Summer stars Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The song sees someone asking their beloved whether they may be around to enjoy a fun night on New Year’s Eve.

It could be the perfect song if you have a special someone you’d like to join you for a dance at your NYE shindig.

Let’s Start the New Year Right – Bing Crosby

For crooner fans, Bing Crosby never disappoints, as he sings about what he wants to get up to when midnight comes.

According to Crosby, his focus is on “kissing the old year out, kissing the new year in,” which many will certainly be doing at the end of a messy NYE party.

The song comes from Holiday Inn, as well as his festive anthem White Christmas.

Funky New Year – Eagles

This song starts with someone many of us can recognise – a party with a few potentially slightly tipsy people trying to get Auld Lang Syne started.

Soon, the song starts properly, as the band gets into a groove, discussing how they can barely remember NYE.

While this may take place after NYE is over, it’s still an ideal tune to start 2020, as long as you want the next decade to start with some funk.

Of course, if you want your party to be themed around something other than the New Year, you’re in luck, as both YouTube and Spotify, among other streaming platforms, have playlists galore to get your party started off right.
