New visas for young Indian professionals amid crackdown on illegal immigrants

Up to 3,000 young Indians can live and work in Britain for two years under a deal struck to return more illegal immigrants from the UK.

A “bespoke route for young professionals will allow 18 to 30 year olds to work and live in the other country for up to 24 months”, the Home Office said.

Indian foreign ministry official Sandeep Chakravorty said the move would boost employment chances for 3,000 young Indian professionals annually.

But the Mobility and Migration Agreement also includes new measures to accelerate the removal of illegal migrants and tackle organised immigration crime.

In 2018, the UK claimed there were as many as 100,000 Indians living illegally in Britain.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said: “This landmark agreement with our close partners in the Government of India will provide new opportunities to thousands of young people in the UK and India seeking to live, work and experience each other’s cultures.

“This agreement will also ensure that the British Government can remove those with no right to be in the UK more easily and crackdown on those abusing our system.”

Delhi has previously complained that Indian students graduating from British universities faced difficulties getting jobs in the UK when their courses finished.

More than 53,000 students from India came to the UK to study last year – up 42% on the previous year, according to the most recent figures.

Meanwhile, No10 said Boris Johnson and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi have brokered a deal on future UK-India relations which marked a “quantum leap” in future cooperation.

“2030 road map” represented a “quantum leap” in the UK-India relationship.

Officials said the new 2030 roadmap covered co-operation across health, climate change, education, science and technology, and defence.

It also includes a commitment to an “enhanced trade partnership” paving the way for a much-prized trade deal.

Ministers are keen to secure a trade agreement with New Delhi following Britain’s withdrawal from the EU.

The virtual meeting took place after Mr Johnson was forced to cancel a trip to India following a devastating surge in coronavirus cases in the country.
