New Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer reveals post-Endgame MCU

The second trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home is so full of Avengers: Endgame spoilers that they actually had Tom Holland give fans a spoiler warning at the very beginning of it, an irony that shouldn’t escape anyone who follows Mr. Holland’s exploits on social media.

But the spoilers aside, it does also give us our first real look at the post-Endgame MCU, and the consequences of both Thanos’ snap and the return of the population…and more.

Here’s that trailer in case you haven’t seen it yet.

SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

So, what have we learned? Well, Tony Stark sure is still dead, and the world is mourning Iron Man. So is Peter, who remains greatly affected by his mentor’s death. The segment of the Avengers: Endgame ending that sent Thor off into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy is at least known to SHIELD as he is listed as “offworld”, while Captain Marvel is “unavailable” for reasons unknown. Presumably, Carol Danvers is dealing with threats of a more galactic nature, too.

Here are a few other key takeaways from the trailer…

Mysterio and the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse?

 Far From Home Mysterio Multiverse

Mysterio is actually Quentin Beck from…an alternate Earth? Nick Fury reveals that Thanos’ snap opened up the door to the multiverse. If this is true, the implications for the future of the MCU are pretty insane (and, among other things, could set up Secret Wars down the road). UNLESS…

What if Mysterio is a fraud? In nearly every version of the character, Quentin Beck is a special effects expert and a master of deception. What if those elemental creatures Spidey and SHIELD are fighting aren’t actual interdimensional entities but rather hi-tech creations of Beck himself? He’d have to be exceptionally good to fool SHIELD but this is such a radical departure, and introducing the concept of the multiverse in a Spider-Man movie would never…oh, wait, never mind!

In any case, don’t be fooled, Beck is still the villain of this movie.

Far From Home Trailer Peter Parker Glasses

And perhaps this is a They Live-style “the glasses reveal the truth” moment?

 Far From Home Tech Gauntlet

Juxtaposing Peter’s “the world needs the next Iron Man” with this very Tony Stark-esque “Eureka” shot of Peter designing some new piece of Spidey tech is great. But the fact that he’s saying that line to Mysterio is a little concerning. It’s easy to see why Peter would want to believe in someone like Beck (especially since Beck seems to be talking to Peter more like an equal/peer than Tony Stark ever did), so he’s bound to be disappointed when Beck turns out to be a fraud, evil, or both.

Spider-Man costumes

Far From Home Iron Spider Suit

Peter is still wearing the hideous Iron Spider costume. However, it makes sense here. He’s trying to honor the memory of Tony Stark, and once a suit gets you through an actual cosmic conflict, it’s kind of tough to give it up when fighting neighborhood criminals.

Spidey bantering with cops is a nice, new take for the movies, too. The MCU Spider-Man movies have skipped over the whole J. Jonah Jameson style “Spider-Man: Threat or Menace” element of Spidey’s PR issues, and given that a chunk of the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame are public knowledge, so is Spidey’s heroic role in resolving those issues.

 Far From Home Stealth Suit

Spidey’s SHIELD-authorised stealth suit is pretty darn cool, though.

MJ knows Peter’s secret

Far From Home - Zendaya as Mary Jane

In the comics, Peter revealing he’s Spider-Man can go a couple of ways. Often, people feel pretty betrayed by all the months/years of lying. Sometimes (as in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics), Mary Jane is stoked to learn the truth, because who wouldn’t want to be best friends with a superhero. MJ’s reaction here is…different. It’s also probably the correct one, because she’s right…it’s pretty obvious.

Crusher Hogan

Oh, and there’s a really fun Spider-Man origin easter egg in here, too…

Far From Home Crusher Hogan Poster

That poster touts the arrival of “Crusher Hogan” for a Forest Hills wrestling match. While we haven’t seen the MCU’s Spidey origin, in the comics (and in a great scene in the first Sam Raimi film, albeit with a different name), Peter took on “Crusher” as one of the first demonstrations of his Spidey powers. Like the “BP” suitcase (for Ben Parker) in the first trailer, it’s nice to see how the MCU is acknowledging the elements of the classic origin story without hitting us over the head with them.

Spider-Man: Far From Home opens in UK cinemas on 2 July.
