Horror fans are rejoicing at the news that a new Scream movie is reportedly in development, and are calling for original stars Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox to return.

According to horror news website Bloody Disgusting, Spyglass Media Group are currently working on a new franchise based on the original movies created by the legendary Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson.

However with Wes’ death in 2015, it’s not yet known if the next Scream installment will directly follow on from 2011’s Scream 4, a remake or focus on a new set of characters being terrorised by a mystery Ghostface.

Williamson wrote all four Scream movies but it’s reported that he will not be involved in the next project.

Fans of the iconic horror franchise seem to be excited by the news of its return, but most are only interested if the original stars, including Neve and Courteney, sign up.

‘KEEP IT if it isn’t the original cast! Scream isn’t Scream without Neve, Courteney, and David!!!!!!!’ one fan stated.

‘#Scream is definitely coming back to the theaters! I hope it’ll be a continuation from the first four movies. Like how the Halloween movie did it last year. After the evens of the 1978 movie. I hope to see Neve back!! [sic]’ one suggested.

However, not everyone is convinced a continuation or remake would work with Wes and Kevin not involved.

‘NO NO NO. Scream won’t be Scream without Wes Craven, Kevin Williamson, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox or David Arquette. Wes has passed away, Williamson isn’t writing this and I highly, highly doubt the actors will be involved. The TV show failed. Move on & leave this series alone,’ a particularly passionate fan tweeted.

Another agreed: ‘I’m so conflicted… Scream is one of my all time favorite films, and I love the series as a whole. Neve Campbell herself said returning to the franchise after Wes Craven’s death wouldn’t be right. I’m not sure how I feel about Scream without Craven, especially if it’s a new cast.’

It’s been eight years since Ghostface was last seen on the big screen with Scream 4, which starred Emma Roberts alongside all the familiar faces of the original cast.

However, the Scream franchise was also given a revival for the small screen with MTV hosting two seasons of a series reboot, and VH1 bringing it back for a fourth one with a whole new cast.

While the first two seasons were warmly received by fans, the third season has been panned.

Neve, 46, admitted it would be difficult to return to Scream without Wes, who was the ‘heart’ of the franchise.

In a 2018 interview, the actress explained: ‘Well you know I think it would be challenging because Wes Craven passed away and he was the reason those movies were so good.

‘I mean obviously Kevin Williamson wrote brilliant scripts but you know Wes was the heart of the thing and he was what kept the dynamic consistent. I think it would be difficult to work with another director. But you never know, you never know.’
