New Ryan Reynolds film Free Guy is basically GTA Online: The Movie

Free Guy – is this what a GTA movie would look like? (pic: 20th Century Fox)

There might never be an official Grand Theft Auto movie but Ryan Reynolds is starring in the big screen parody you didn’t know you needed.

Despite how much the games borrow from famous movies, Rockstar Games has always said they’re not interested in making a Grand Theft Auto film adaptation – despite numerous offers.

That doesn’t mean it will never happen but for now you’ve got the next best thing: the movie Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer (Villanelle from Killing Eve).

The trailer below dropped over the weekend and shows Reynolds as a NPC (non-player character) in what looks very (very) much like GTA Online.

From the weird running animations to the constant destruction and violence that nobody else seems to be paying attention to, the film is so obviously GTA Online it hurts.

The story concept also borrows from another obvious source, since this basically looks to be The Lego Movie but with video games – even some of the shots of Reynolds waking up in bed are curiously similar to the Lego film.

Judging by the trailer, Reynolds’ character seems to be unaware he’s in a video game and Comer has to show him the truth (again, just The Lego Movie).

But despite the contrived setting it does all look pretty good, especially with Taika Waititi as the bad guy.

The director (Real Steel’s Shawn Levy) clearly understands the absurdity of online video games, even when they have realistic settings, and we like little details like the music coming on when Reynolds puts on the first person glasses.

Free Guy is out this July from what was 20th Century Fox… which may mean new owners Disney will not bother to promote it properly. But we’ll have to see about that.
