New Resident Evil in 2021 but no more remakes after Resident Evil 3 claims rumour

Capcom are allegedly putting at least a temporary halt to their Resident Evil remakes in favour of remaking other franchises.

After the Resident Evil 2 remake last January and the Resident Evil 3 remake coming up in April it wouldn’t be unreasonable to imagine that maybe there was one planned for next year as well, but apparently that’s not the case.

According to serial leaker AestheticGamer, who broke the recent news about new Silent Hill games but specialises in Resident Evil, there won’t be any more Resident Evil remakes out for ‘the next few years’ after Resident Evil 3.

Instead, other Capcom franchises are being rebooted in the same style, using the same RE Engine. He doesn’t mention their names, but the most obvious candidates are Dino Crisis and Onimusha – which already had a remaster last year.

All of that is very believable, and easy to guess at, but what is surprising is that it’s claimed that Resident Evil 8 is also not out next year but that there will be another Resident Evil game out in 2021 anyway.

There’s no clue as to what it is but presumably it’s some kind of spin-off, of which there have certainly been plenty in the past (and few of them anywhere near as good as the mainline series).

It’s been three years now since Resident Evil 7, so you’d normally expect to hear about the next numbered sequel round about now, but according to AestheticGamer it’s still years away.

Supposedly the game has been in development since late 2016, with work pausing to get Resident Evil 7’s DLC and Resident Evil 2 done. But apparently it was scrapped around six to seven months ago and work restarted from scratch.

Although it’s only a rumour, that does match with the fact that Capcom has not said a word about Resident Evil 8 yet.

And they do have a long history of scrapping Resi games partway through development and starting again, as happened with both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4.
