The next Mass Effect game is at least six years away and possibly even further off than that, according to two separate sources.
For a moment there it looked like BioWare was getting ready to reveal something significant about the new Mass Effect, but in the end the new tease for N7 Day didn’t really tell you anything other than the events of Andromeda won’t be ignored and that one of the new characters has a thing for trench coats.
But if it seems like BioWare is being unnecessarily secretive there’s a good reason why we haven’t seen more of the game yet: it probably won’t be out until 2029 or later.
You could almost guess that yourself, given Dragon Age Dreadwolf is due out first and that doesn’t have a release date yet either, but according to one source: ‘This game is so far away. It is so far in another galaxy right now.’
Mass Effect was discussed on Jeff Grubb’s Game Mess Morning YouTube show and both he and fellow host Tamoor Hussain claimed to have separate sources that both pointed towards the game being several years away from launch.
‘This game is just nowhere near coming out,’ said Grubb. ‘I was told that when they revealed Dragon Age Dreadwolf in 2018, that this is similar in terms of timeline. That was announced in 2018 and we’re not getting that game until maybe next year.’
‘So, now do the math for that, and we’re talking 2029 for Mass Effect 5.’
According to Grubb, the N7 tease was not meant to imply that the game was anywhere close to release and was instead intended merely to assure fans that work is continuing.
There’s no suggestion that Dreadwolf will definitely be released next year but there is reason to hope there’ll be an update, and perhaps even a release date, at The Game Awards on December 8.
The game has been featured during the event multiple times before and there’s been no other official update on it for a long time.
Whether you’re interested in Dragon Age or not there’ll be no substantial work – or information – for the new Mass Effect until Dreadwolf is finished and out. Although any DLC plans for the game may continue to slow down work on Mass Effect.
Which means Mass Effect 4, or whatever it ends up being called, may not even be out until 2030 or 2031.
