New Kingdom Hearts game underway at Square Enix, but is it Kingdom Hearts 4?

Kingdom Hearts 3 – what’s next for the franchise?

Job ads in Japan reveal that Square Enix is gearing up for a new Disney project but is it a numbered sequel or a spin-off?

Considering Kingdom Hearts 3 was the best-selling entry in the series so far, you’d think that news that Square Enix is hiring for a new entry would mean Kingdom Hearts 4 is already on the way.

But somehow there were 14 years between Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3, with the intervening period filled with endless spin-offs and remasters.

So when Gematsu reports that Square Enix is advertising for UI designers, effect designers, and technical artists to work on the ‘HD development of the Kingdom Hearts series’ it could really be anything.

HD is a slightly odd term to be using nowadays though and really only used to imply a remaster of something that was previously released at a lower resolution.

That may point towards a remaster of one of the portable spin-offs, although none seems especially relevant and Kingdom Hearts 3 was supposed to draw a line under the whole Dark Seeker Saga.

A Nintendo Switch port is possible at some point but none of those roles, especially things like a user interface designer, seem like the sort of thing you’d need for that.

A DLC expansion called Re Mind is due out for Kingdom Hearts 3 this winter and while that’s nothing to do with this the release may give a clearer hint as to where the franchise is going in the future.

As long as Disney lets Square Enix keep the licence you can be sure there will be more, the only question is how long it takes to make them…
