New games industry charter aims to help companies ‘attract, select, develop and retain’ diverse talent

Putting The G Into Gaming (GIG) and RightTrack Learning have launched the G Into Gaming Diversity Charter, a new initiative focused on building more gender diverse and inclusive workplaces in the games industry. The project encourages companies of all sizes to “increase diversity and inclusion in their businesses through their activities in the attraction, selection, development and retention of talent”.

The initiative works to help companies of all sizes to attract women from outside the industry into games, support women already in the industry, work with schools, universities and parents to promote games as an attractive career option for girls and young women, and provide studios with practical advice on how they can address gender imbalance.

As well as accreditation, all companies that sign up to the free initiative will receive a diversity benchmarking tool and health check, attraction, selection, development and retention tool kits, charter badges in recognition of their achievements, and “benefits from associated PR and marketing”.

“Just 20 per cent of the games industry workforce is female. An even smaller percentage of those are engaged in development roles or in leadership positions,” said Liz Prince, GIG founder and business manager at recruitment specialist, Amiqus. “We’re here to find ways the industry can put its foot on the accelerator to make games a go-to career choice for women and girls from all walks of life.

“Together with RightTrack, we have developed a Charter to showcase those studios who commit to take proactive steps for change and would encourage games businesses to sign up and invest in steps and actions that will diversify and future proof our industry.”

“In delivering diversity and inclusion training for clients, including UKIE, we have established a strong understanding of the games industry’s specific needs and are excited to pledge our commitment to support businesses signing up to the Charter,” added RightTrack’s lead director, Claudia Cooney.
