New Feminist Frequency Series Discusses Queer Tropes in Video Games – Gamer Professionals

After 2 years, Feminist Frequency has released another miniseries which brings awareness towards a significant topic that isn’t discussed much in the gaming industry. Carolyn Petit, the managing editor at Feminist Frequency, presents what Queer Tropes are and what they look like in videogames.

This 3-part miniseries is meant to challenge the past and current representations of the LGBTQ+ community. For example, the show examines topics like how homophobia is reinforced in games by making the queer characters seem evil. It also tackles issues such as heteronormativity, representation of queer relationships, and transphobia.

Anita Sarkeesian, the executive director, has dealt with harassment for her media critiques so there is a possibility that this new series will get people riled up again. In the past, Feminist Frequency presented a series called Tropes vs Women in Video Games which brought topics like misogyny, toxic masculinity, and objectification of women in the gaming industry under the spotlight. Although that miniseries was meant to present information that can help the gaming industry head in a better direction, it rubbed many people the wrong way.

However, if those topics interest you, they also have a podcast you can check out called Feminist Frequency Radio. On that podcast, Anita Sarkeesian, Carolyn Petit, and Ebony Aster discuss and critique more of pop culture.
