New Carnival cruise ship Mardi Gras will have a two-deck ‘playground’ with rollercoaster and water park

CARNIVAL Cruises have released new details of their long awaited cruise ship, Mardi Gras.

The cruise giant revealed last year that it will feature the world’s first rollercoaster at sea but now we know there will be a massive water park on board as well.

The thrilling new attractions will become the centrepiece of the ship when it debuts in August 2020.

It will form part of a two-deck high “ultimate playground”.

The star attraction will be BOLT, the world’s first roller coaster at sea.

The open air ride will feature nearly 800ft of twists and turns and will be built by Munich-based roller coaster specialists Maurer Rides.

The tracks will be wrapped around the top deck, which includes the ship’s funnel.

Two riders at a time will be able to go on the motorcycle-like vehicle and race 187ft above sea level with full view of the ocean around them.

The riders will actually be able to control the speed themselves as well, and hit top speeds of 40 miles per hour.

Just like regular theme park rides, guests can have their photos taken during the ride and get to keep it as a souvenir thanks to the cameras in the cars and around the track.

Also on the ship will be a massive water park – the biggest in Carnival’s fleet – featuring three different slights.

The biggest, Blue Lightning, has 312 feet of twists and turns.

There’s also the 229 foot long Orange Thunder, which drops riders into a splash zone.

The third major side is Carnival’s signature Twister, which is 265 foot long and perfect for kids.

And for the younger guests, there will also be a PowerDrencher tipping bucket that pours 150-gallons of water over you each time as well as different water toys.

For those who want to stay active, there’s a huge SportSquare complex that features a 6000 foot long suspended ropes course, nine-hole miniature golf, a jogging track and outdoor fitness equipment, and a basketball court.

All of these are featured in just one of the six zones on board and the company said it will release more details in the coming months.

The ship itself, Mardi Gras, will be based at Port Canaveral in Florida though its itinerary hasn’t been revealed yet.

However, the company said that its inaugural journey will be on August 31 next year in Europe before it moves to New York and finally to its home base in Florida in October.

The cruise line will also be launching a second XL-class ship in 2022 to mark the company’s 50th anniversary.
