New British-grown chilli dubbed ‘world’s hottest’ available at Tesco

A new type of chilli is set to hit Tesco stores around the country and is said to be so hot that those who want to try it need to wear gloves when cooking.

Fittingly dubbed ‘the Armageddon’, the new British-grown chilli is touted to be one of the hottest in the world – only second to the infamous Carolina Reaper which reaches 1.5 million on the Scoville scale (the system used to measure chilli pepper heat).

However, the Armageddon – which currently reaches 1.3 million on the Scoville scale – is tipped to become the world’s hottest as it gets hotter by growing in sustained warm weather.

Described as being 400 times hotter than a jalapeno, the Armageddon is grown in Blunham, Bedfordshire by farmer Salvatore Genovese.

Genovese said in a statement: “In the last year as a result of the soaring demand for really hot chilli peppers we’ve invested in new machinery that has helped us extend the British growing season by three months – from June until Christmas.

“We’ve also extended the farm by a further 2.5 acres and now have 130,000 plants including the Cherry Bomb, Naga, and several others.”

Earlier today Good Morning Britain presenters Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway tested the new chilli live on air joined by chilli eating champion Shahina Waseem.

After taking a bite of the chilli, Waseem said: “That’s hot. It hits you straight away.”

Shephard and Garraway followed suit with Shephard asking Garraway, “Where is it burning you?”

An exasperated Garraway replied: “Everywhere. My god that’s getting hotter isn’t it?”

Eating one of the world’s hottest chilli’s isn’t something we would recommend doing at 6am in the morning and even Tesco buyer Nick Fould recommends having just a few ‘tiny slivers’ if you want to give the Armageddon a go for yourself.

The Armageddon costs £1 for a 15g packet at Tesco.
