A NEW British chilli is tipped to become the hottest in the world.

The Armageddon, on sale in Tesco, is more than 400 times hotter than the jalapeno.

It can be used sparingly in cooking but folk are advised to wear gloves.

The “fruity” Armageddon scores 1.3million on the chilli-heat Scoville scale — just behind the world’s fieriest, the Carolina Reaper, on 1.5million.

But chillies get hotter with sustained warm weather and it is thought it may soon match or beat the Reaper.

The Armageddon is being grown by Salvatore Genovese, who churns out a million chillies a week at his farm in Blunham, Bedfordshire.

Salvatore, 47, said: “Sure, some like to show how tough they are by munching one of these super-hot chillies.

But the key to the demand is more and more families in Britain are using them in cooking.”

Tesco buyer Nick Foulds hailed its “wonderful fruity taste”. But he warned: “You only need a few tiny slivers.”

A BIT PHEW-TY

IT’S fruity, so I had a bigger bite, writes Daniel Jones.

Bang. Sweat poured out.

I also had a curry with one.

It was more civilised.

But the next day wasn’t fun.
