2K has finally announced a new BioShock game, but it’s going to be in development for ‘the next several years’…

It’s been six long years since BioShock Infinite but now publisher 2K has finally confirmed that a new game is underway, by a new studio set-up specifically for the purpose.

They’ve said essentially nothing about the new game itself though, other than it will be in development for ‘the next several years’ – so don’t expect it anytime soon but do it expect it to be next gen only.

Instead, all the attention at the moment is on Cloud Chamber, which is actually two separate studios, one based in the San Francisco Bay Area and the other in Montréal, Canada.

Although many of the Cloud Chamber developers are said to be veterans of previous BioShock games there’s no mention of series creator Ken Levine, who is still working at 2K studio Ghost Story Games but hasn’t yet produced any new games while there.

Instead, Cloud Chamber will be headed up by 22-year industry veteran Kelley Gilmore – 2K’s first female studio head – who most recently worked at Firaxis Games on titles such as Civilization and XCOM.

‘As we continue growing our product portfolio, we remain inspired by opportunities to invest further in our valuable IP, great people and their collective, long-term potential,’ said 2K president David Ismailer.

‘BioShock is one of the most beloved, critically praised and highest-rated franchises of the last console generation. We can’t wait to see where its powerful narrative and iconic, first-person shooter gameplay head in the future with our new studio team at Cloud Chamber leading the charge.’

So far, there’s not been so much as a bit of concept art for the new game and everything suggests it won’t be seen in public for a long while yet.

However, there is an outside chance you may get some sort of teaser trailer at The Game Awards on Friday.
