New air services to Norwich and Newcastle launched as airline begins Highlands to East Midlands flights

Loganair services from Aberdeen Airport to Newcastle and Norwich began operation yesterday, making it the Granite City’s largest operator both by number of flights and destinations served.

Loganair is also marking its first services from Inverness to the East Midlands, operating six flights per week between the two airports on a 49-seat Embraer 145 jet aircraft.

It is providing up to three non-stop weekday services to Norwich and Newcastle from Aberdeen, as well as non-stop Sunday services to each region – also operated by a 49-seat Embraer 145 jet aircraft.

The airline says ticket sales from oil and gas customers have been encouraging. People travelling north with Loganair will also benefit from secure onward connections to Orkney, Shetland and Esbjerg.

Kay Ryan, commercial director at Loganair, said: “We’re delighted to be further strengthening our hub at Aberdeen Airport, complementing our existing network in the north-east.

“We know our new routes from Newcastle and Norwich are important links for the offshore industry and we’re looking forward to delivering a frequent, dependable and rewarding service for those in the industry.

“East Midlands is an ideally positioned airport, providing easy access to major cities across six different counties.”

Steve Szalay, managing director at Aberdeen International Airport, said: “It’s fantastic to have Loganair increasing its presence and capacity at Aberdeen International Airport. The move helps solidify the North East’s connectivity to the North East of England and East Anglia; some of the UK’s leading off-shore energy regions.”

Paul Livingstone, Head of Business Development at NOF – which supports businesses operating in the energy sector – said: “NOF is confident this service will further strengthen the ties between the offshore energy sector supply chains in the North East and Scotland, leading to greater opportunities and stimulating industry innovation. I’m sure this service can have a strong and positive impact on the economies of both regions.”

Inverness Airport general manager Graeme Bell said: “Loganair’s new East Midlands service is an excellent addition to the destinations passengers can now fly to from Inverness. It establishes fast and efficient links to the heart of England and will be welcomed by business and leisure travellers alike.”
