Neville aims dig at Liverpool with "that won't help Thiago Alcantara" comment

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has aimed another cheeky dig at Liverpool by making light-hearted fun of the Scouse accent during the Reds’ game against Chelsea.

Neville’s allegiances to his former side are no secret, and he and fellow Sky Sports pundit and Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher share a healthy on-screen rivalry in which they regularly go toe-to-toe over matters concerning their ex-teams.

Following kick-off at Stamford Bridge main commentator Martin Tyler and Neville were discussing Liverpool’s signing of Thiago Alcantara, who joined the Reds in a £27m move from Bayern Munich on Friday.

Tyler remarked that the Spanish midfielder speaks “excellent English” – to which Neville couldn’t resist a reply of “that won’t help him where he’s living,” with reference to the difficulty some have in understanding the Liverpudlian accent.

It is not the first time Neville has had a bit of fun at the expense of the Scouse drawl.

In a Sky Sports feature last year in which he and Carragher debated the pros and cons of Manchester and Liverpool, one of the topics was which city had the better accent.

Neville said: “Oh my gosh, I am not even arguing on that one. Honestly, I’ve never heard one man say ‘OK’ in so many different ways. It is awful.”

Thiago, meanwhile, started the game against Chelsea on the bench, with his manager Jurgen Klopp insisting he still needed more time to get used to his side’s system.

“No, I didn’t think for a second about starting him today,” Klopp said before kick-off. “It’s really funny that people could consider that because of the way that Bayern and Liverpool play.

“There might be similar parts but they play with two midfielders and a No.10 and we play most of the time different, so there was no chance (he would start today).”
