NetherRealm to give disgruntled Mortal Kombat 11 players in-game currency as it vows to tweak controversial Towers of Time mode

Mortal Kombat 11 developer NetherRealm will give players in-game currency as it tweaks the controversial Towers of Time mode.

Towers of Time is a dynamic, time-limited set of challenges that see players face off against computer-controlled opponents for rewards.

The problem is a lot of these towers are incredibly difficult – to the point of feeling impossible to complete and unfair to play. Towers include modifiers that can make life incredibly difficult – modifiers can send projectiles onto the stage to damage you in some way, or tweak the way the stage works to make it harder, or even buff the AI in some way.

Towers of Time is so difficult, some players have suggested the entire thing was designed to push players to use consumables – items that help level the playing field. The video below gives you an idea of just how ridiculously hard Mortal Kombat 11’s towers can be.

Compounding the issue is the miserly rewards so far doled out by the Towers of Time mode. For a game with so many virtual currencies, unlockables and materials to obtain, the rewards on offer by Towers of Time can often feel paltry.

In a post on the Mortal Kombat reddit, NetherRealm acknowledged the difficulty issues in Towers of Time and said changes are on the way.

It also promised to give all players 500,000 Koins, 500 Hearts, 1000 Soul Fragments and 1000 Time Krystals “to help you along your way”. Koins are Mortal Kombat 11’s primary virtual currency, and are mainly used to open treasure chests in the Krypt. Time Krystals are Mortal Kombat 11’s premium currency, and are gained slowly through gameplay and can be bought with real-world money. 1000 Time Krystals costs £8. A character skin costs 500 Time Krystals.

A patch for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game is due early next week. This will reduce AI difficulty, increase rewards in Towers of Time and issue the thank you gift.

Two patches are on their way to the Nintendo Switch version of the game. The first will reduce difficulty in Towers of Time as well as make improvements to stability. The second will reduce the AI difficulty further, increase rewards in Towers of Time and issue the thank you gift. There’s no release date yet for this second patch.

A patch has already been issued to the PC version, with a second due early next week. The PC patch already out includes a raft of fixes and tweaks – there’s more on Mortal Kombat 11’s Steam page.

“We’re dedicated to bringing you the best experience possible and working to get the latest updates and patches live across all platforms,” NetherRealm said.
