Netflix is reportedly working on a screen adaptation of Matilda the musical alongside Sony Pictures, and our childhood selves can’t wait.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Roald Dahl’s much-loved book, which was the basis for the 1996 hit children’s film will once again be made into a movie.

Matilda captured everyone’s imagination after the young bookworm, played by Mara Wilson, who was mistreated by her parents finds out she has telekinetic powers.

Her resulting friendship with her teacher, Miss Honey, brings some happiness to her life after her talents are finally appreciated instead of being ignored.

The new film is reportedly set to have a full theatrical and home video run in the UK before being available for streaming all over the world, according to sources.

The details on how the production costs will be split is still apparently being worked out as well as the release schedules.

According to the Hollywood Reporter’s previous reports, Sony’s TriStar division is devoting resources to making movies ‘belonging exclusively or almost exclusively to Netflix’.

Matilda became a fan favourite after its release, and the musical has been running in London since 2011 as well as playing around the world, including 1,555 performances on Broadway between 2013 and 2017.

Netflix had also previously said it would adapt Road Dahl’s children’s stories including Matilda, The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory into animated series.

According to sources, the film adaptation of Matilda the Musical will be helmed by Matthew Warchus, who directed the stage musical and is also the artistic director for London’s Old Vic Theatre, and Tony award winner Dennis Kelly will write the screenplay.

Further details on who will star in the film are yet to be revealed, along with any estimated release date.
