Netflix has shut down production on its new live-action series Cowboy Bepop.

In a bid to increase their anime coverage, Netflix had announced a never-been-done-before live action remake of Cowboy Bepop that was due to premiere on the streaming service this year.

But, Deadline reveals that production has been shut down on the series for at least seven months, after the show’s leading star John Cho sustained a knee injury on set.

It’s thought production of the 10-episode series will go on hiatus for seven-nine months, following the freak accident that happened on set in New Zealand.

It’s said Netflix are willing to wait for Cho to recover from his injury, rather than recast him – which means filming could be delayed up until next summer.

A spokesperson for Netflix said in a statement: ‘Our thoughts are with John, and he has our complete support as he recuperates from this injury.’

John, meanwhile, thanked fans for their messages of support while addressing his injury on Instagram.

He wrote: ‘“Water can flow or it can crash,” – Bruce Lee. Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. Gonna be back and flowing in no time!’

Cowboy Bebop is an anime series which focuses on a team of bounty hunters working on the spaceship Bebop in the year 2071.

Originally airing in 1998 on Tokyo TV and crossing the pond as the first anime to be shown on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim in the US in 2001, many regard Cowboy Bebop as the greatest anime of all time.

The 26 episode series is set in 2071, and sees Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter – also known as a ‘cowboy’ – flying the good ship Bebop with his partner Jet Black.
