Netflix releases daily 'Top 10' lists that show the most popular shows and movies in your country

Netflix is helping you decide on what to watch next by recommending movies and shows that are popular in your country.

The streaming giant has introduced a new row in its interface that shows the top 10 titles, as well as the top 10 most popular series and films.

The feature comes after the firm has come under fire for its lack of transparency about how its original series are performing – producers, actors and agents have looked to Netflix for more information over the years without getting a response.

Although Netflix will not be releasing viewership numbers, it will reveal the top 10 movies and shows in a list that will be updated every day.

The new addition is presented as a tab in users’ accounts, which they can choose either to either see the most popular TV shows or movies, which are presented in a row.

These titles will also have red badges in the top right corner that reads ‘Top 10’, so users can find the most popular content outside of the new tabs.

Although new to most of the world, the Top 10 feature has been available in Mexico and the UK for the past six months.

Cameron Johnson, Netflix’s product innovation, said: ‘

Members in both countries have found them useful, so we are now rolling them out to even more.’

‘When you watch a great movie or TV show, you share it with family and friends, or talk about it at work, so other people can enjoy it too.

‘We hope these top 10 lists will help create more of these shared moments, while also helping all of us find something to watch more quickly and easily.’

Although there are thousands of titles on the platform, Netflix has lost thousands over the past few years.

Since 2010, 2,000 movies have left while the number television shows have tripled – many of which are original series.

In 2010, Netflix had 530 TV shows and 6,755 movies, according to Flixable. Today, the number of TV shows has nearly tripled, to 1,569, and the number of movies offered has decreased to 4,010.

As of last year, original Netflix productions now account for more than half of the new release arriving to the platform.

Of all releases available in the U.S. that went live in the year up to December 2018, 51 percent were originals, as opposed to those that were acquired by the platform.

This compares to just 25 percent original content released in the year to December 2016, research from the UK-based media analysis firm Ampere indicates.

In the UK, Ampere found 4,600 total titles – both original and acquired – were also available in more than 15 other Netflix territories around the world – up from 3,000 in 2017.

Despite the progress, just 11% of all titles that exist on Netflix U.S. are originals, which also highlights the sheer volume of productions it has acquired since committing to becoming a streaming only service.

Nonetheless, the figure still far outweigh nearest rivals Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, which accounts in their case for just one percent.
